Inside Algonquin Arts Theatre

(MANASQUAN, NJ) -- Algonquin Arts Theatre has announced their 2023-2024 Broadway Series featuring six musicals and two plays. Algonquin begins the summer with one of the world’s most beloved musicals, The Sound of Music followed by the Tony Award-winning Avenue Q, an adults-only musical featuring puppets and actors. In October, Algonquin Arts Theatre presents their premiere of The Hunchback of Notre Dame based on the Victor Hugo novel with the beloved Disney music. Just in time for the holidays and back by popular demand is ELF: The Musical based on the 2003 film. In the winter, the theatre will present two thrilling plays, Ira Levin’s murder mystery/comedy Deathtrap and Stephen King’s Misery (adapted by William Goldman). The 2023-2024 season will close with two of the most popular musicals of all time, Fiddler on the Roof and Grease!

The Sound of Music - July 15 - July 30. Join Maria, Captain Von Trapp and his children in one of the most beloved musicals of all time, The Sound of Music. This classic has enchanted audiences for more than 50 years, featuring a trove of cherished songs, including "Climb Ev'ry Mountain," "My Favorite Things," "Do Re Mi," "Sixteen Going on Seventeen." The Sound of Music has won the hearts of audiences worldwide, earning five Tony Awards and five Oscars.

Avenue Q - August 12 - August 20. This show contains mature content, full puppet nudity and is not suitable for children. Winner of the Tony Triple Crown for Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Book, this laugh-out-loud musical - featuring actors and puppets - tells the story of a recent college grad named Princeton, who moves into a shabby New York apartment on Avenue Q. He soon discovers that, although the residents seem nice, it's clear that this is not your ordinary neighborhood, which is a racy, adults-only cross between South Park and Sesame Street.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame - October 7 - October 22. Based on the Victor Hugo novel and songs from the Disney animated feature, The Hunchback of Notre Dame showcases the film's Academy Award-nominated score, plus new songs written for the stage. The show's bold theatrics combined with the music's orchestral and choral power, promise to transport audiences back to fifteenth century Paris and inside the walls of the world's most famous cathedral with Quasimodo, Esmeralda & Claude Frollo. This powerful and timeless tale of love and heroism, coming in the least expected forms, will have audiences mesmerized by the magic of this truly unforgettable musical.

Elf - The Musical - December 2 - December 27.  Based on the 2003 film, Elf - The Musical is the hilarious tale of Buddy, a young orphan child who mistakenly crawls into Santa's bag of gifts and is transported back to the North Pole. Unaware that he is actually human, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father, discover his true identity, and help New York remember the true meaning of Christmas. This modern day Christmas classic is sure to make everyone embrace their inner Elf.

Deathtrap - January 19 - January 28, 2024. Sidney Bruhl would do anything to publish the next great play. He would even kill for it. This dark comedy thriller will have audiences laughing one moment and screaming in terror the next as Sidney discovers he may not be the only murderer in the room. One of the great popular successes of recent Broadway history, Deathtrap provides twists and turns and sudden shocks in such abundance that audiences will be held spellbound until the very last moment. This show contains violence and limited use of strong language. They encourage you to use your judgment based on your child's age and maturity level.

Misery - February 24 - March 3, 2024.  Made popular by the Kathy Bates, James Caan film, Misery becomes stranger than fiction when an acclaimed romance novelist wakes up in the home of his "Number One Fan." Rescued from a wintery car crash, Paul Sheldon finds himself incapacitated in the secluded home of Annie Wilkes, a seemingly kind nurse. When events take a nightmarish turn, the injured Paul realizes the unhinged Annie has no intention of letting him leave. Based on Stephen King's best-selling novel, the tense cat-and-mouse game will grip you until the very end. This show contains violence and limited use of strong language. They encourage you to use your judgment based on your child's age and maturity level.

Fiddler on the Roof - April 6 - April 21, 2024. A journey of love, loss, faith and family, Fiddler on the Roof is a celebration of life and all its challenges. The original production won ten Tony Awards, including a special Tony for becoming the longest-running Broadway musical of all time. Featuring the Broadway classics "Tradition," "If I Were a Rich Man," "Sunrise, Sunset," "Matchmaker, Matchmaker" and "To Life," Fiddler on the Roof will introduce a new generation to this uplifting celebration that raises its cup to joy! To love! To life!

Grease - May 10 - May 19, 2024. It's STILL the word! One of the world's favorite musicals hits the stage in a high-octane production featuring all the hit songs you love, including: "Summer Nights," "You're the One That I Want," "Hopelessly Devoted to You" and "Greased Lightning." Danny, Sandy and the coolest gang of students from Rydell High take you back to the 1950's when drive-in movies, sock-hops and tough talkin' Pink Ladies defined a generation. So get ready to hand-jive the night away with this 'electrifyin,' musical that will make you want to stand up and shout, "A-wop-bop-a- loo-bop A-wop-bam-boom!"
