First Avenue Playhouse presents "A Streetcar Named Desire" in October

(ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NJ) -- First Avenue Playhouse presents A Streetcar Named Desire across three weekends in October (October 12-13, October 18-20, and October 25-26, 2024). The classic play was was written by Tennessee Williams during a period of change in America after World War II. It was first produced and published in 1947 and winner of the Pulitzer Prize for that year.

One of the most admired plays of it's time, the story famously recounts how the faded and promiscuous Blanche DeBois leaves her once-prosperous situation, after encountering a series of personal losses, to move into a shabby apartment in New Orleans rented by her younger sister Stella and brother-in-law Stanley.

The story concerns her mental and moral disintegration and ultimate ruin, as her neurotic and genteel pretensions are no match for the harsh realities symbolized by the brutish Stanley.  She eventually loses her grip on reality as she fails to get what it is she most desires. Streetcar launched the careers of Marlon Brando, Jessica Tandy, Kim Hunter and Karl Malden.  It also solidified the position of Tennessee Williams as one of the most important young playwrights of his generation, as well as that of Elia Kazan as the greatest American stage director of the 40's and 50's.

The cast includes Stefany, Eileen Marks DiFabio, Ryan Irving. Josie Lynne Borden, Joe Zedeny, Kevin Albanese, Rebecca Worthington. Frank Leonhardt, Joshua Gassert, Ahma Simakowicz, and Dave Harris. The production is directed by Sharon Coyle and Mark Papa.

Performances take place October 12-13, October 18-20, and October 25-26 with shows Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30pm and Sunday matinees at 2:30pm. General admission seating is $30; Students/Seniors - $25 (Fridays and Sundays only). Reservations are required and can be made by calling the Playhouse at 732-291-7552. First Avenue Playhouse is located at 123 First Avenue in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey.
