Brooklyn Comes Alive to Take Place September 17th

originally published: 07/11/2022

(BROOKLYN, NY) -- On September 17, Brooklyn Comes Alive will return to The Brooklyn Mirage for its sixth installment. The one-day festival brings together the best of live music––across jazz, jam and funk––for unforgettable collaborations, unique one-off performances and one-of-a-kind music experiences.

Presented by GMP Live, Avant Gardner, Bowery Presents and Live For Live Music, the event will donate a portion of each ticket sold to Backline, a national non-profit that offers mental health resources to music industry professionals.

Built from the fabric of the vibrant live music community of Brooklyn and inspired by New Orleans and its famed Jazz & Heritage Festival, Brooklyn Comes Alive has been breaking the mold of traditional festivals with unprecedented music experiences since 2015. This year, Brooklyn Comes Alive will feature livetronica heroes STS9, avant-groove explorers Medeski Martin & Wood, future-funk sextet Lettuce, and the debut of Cool Cool Cool, a new project from former members of Turkuaz that is funky, fresh and ready to throw a party.

Much like past "Comes Alive" events, Brooklyn Comes Alive 2022 will be full of exciting firsts and never-before-seen surprises. The event will mark STS9's first show in NYC since 2019, when they last took over the Brooklyn Mirage, and they plan to celebrate their return to Brooklyn with a can't-miss late-night set. Similarly, Medeski Martin & Wood, who have not played on their home turf in NYC since 2019 and have not performed live since before the pandemic, will use the special appearance to celebrate their 30th anniversary as a band, which took place last year.

Lettuce will be notching both their Brooklyn Comes Alive debut and their Brooklyn Mirage debut as they celebrate the release of their latest album, Unify, but the band's individual members are all Brooklyn Comes Alive veterans. Drummer Adam Deitch, in particular, has been a part of six sets at Brooklyn Comes Alive, making this year his seventh–the most of any artist in the event's history. Previous festival attendees might remember his four sets in 2016 (J Dilla Tribute, [Br]eaking [Bi]scuits with members of The Disco Biscuits, DRKWAV, and Manic Focus & Friends), as well as his Adam Deitch Quartet set in 2018 and his Break Live Science Band sunset show in 2021.

The brand new Cool Cool Cool is made up of Craig Brodhead, Chris Brouwers, Michelangelo Carubba, Shira Elias, Sammi Garett, Greg Sanderson and Josh Schwartz. While Schwartz won't be present for this performance, the band's first-ever appearance will feature The Nth Power's Nate Edgar on bass.

Festival director Gideon Plotnicki (GMP Live), shares, "It is so rewarding to work with some of our favorite artists to deliver special performances, debut new projects, and create memorable experiences for fans and bands alike at Brooklyn Comes Alive. That we get to do this in one of the country's best live music venues, in the best city in the world, is a dream come true. Brooklyn, we're back, and we can't wait to celebrate with you at the incredible and unique venue, The Brooklyn Mirage."

Kunj Shah, founder of Live For Live Music and Brooklyn Comes Alive, explains, "As our flagship "Comes Alive” event, Brooklyn Comes Alive represents the idea of limitless possibilities. From eclectic lineups to unique collaborations to special guests to the debut of new projects, the Comes Alive events have always been a place where we get to experiment with our wildest music ideas and see them come to life on the big stage."

"This event is about unifying musicians and stunning fans with their favorite live music greats," Shah adds, "If you can dream it, you can build it, and if you can build it, they will come."

All tickets, including VIP packages, will go on sale Friday, July 15 at 12:00pm at brooklyncomesalive.com.  General admission tickets are available in three tiers, starting at $65 and increase as tiers sell out. The elevated VIP experiences, VIP and Super VIP, include expedited entry, access to the VIP Mezzanine with perfect sightlines to the stage and access to VIP bathrooms, with the Super VIP package including an exclusive, limited edition merch item. Note: ticketing platform DICE will include all fees and taxes up front in their listed ticket price.

Brooklyn Comes Alive will donate a portion of every ticket sold to Backline, a national nonprofit organization that connects music industry professionals and their families with mental health and wellness resources—streamlining access to a network of trusted organizations and care providers who offer immediate access to safe and private mental health support.

Brooklyn Comes Alive was inspired by the vibrant musical communities of Brooklyn and New Orleans. The festival puts its focus on the artists, bringing some of the most talented players in live music together to celebrate incredible musicianship, special collaborations, and unique musical experiences. The event pushes the boundaries of a traditional music festival model and creates an unprecedented experience for fans. In its earlier years (2015-2018), BCA featured a lineup of unique, one-off performances, akin to the late night shows found in NOLA after the New Orleans Jazz Festival, at venues in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, such as Brooklyn Bowl, Music Hall of Williamsburg, Schimanski, and more. In recent years, after out-growing the previous iteration of the event, BCA moved to The Brooklyn Mirage and has evolved to feature top-notch, nationally touring talent from the Jam, Funk, and Jazz scenes delivering special, one-of-a-kind shows that can only be experienced at Brooklyn Comes Alive.
