BlowUpRadio.com's New & Notable NJ Music 4/3/23

By Lazlo

originally published: 04/03/2023

Lazlo, founder of BlowUpRadio.com (an online radio station based around New Jersey artists), shines a light on some of the many new releases from NJ based musicians each week with this column. This week Lazlo takes a look at releases by Pepperwine, Fox Teeth, Janitor, and Terra Filia.

Pepperwine - "Try". Pepperwine's latest single, "Try", showcases their ability to, as their bio states, create, "Indie pop with fusions of soul, funk, and groove." The result is a lovely song that is both laid back, and danceable pop.

Fox Teeth - "Through the Blue". Fox Teeth's sophomore album, "Through the Blue", showcases more of their amazing emo-pop-rock sound that they honed on their debut, "Tite!", a few years ago. But there has been growth. By their own admission in their bio some of their newer songs delve into more serious subject matter than their debut, which in my opinion helps to make this album even better. I love this album, but I am also excited to hear their continued growth on their next album.

Janitor - "Home For Breakfast". 17 songs in 23 minutes... yep, the songs on Janitor's "Home For Breakfast" are short, but most are more garage rock than what one would typically associate with punk rock. But their shortness doesn't make them any less memorable or good.

Regular listeners of BlowUpRadio.com may also recognize this band as they were formerly known as Planet Janitor and put out a great EP last year, "The Lawnmower Man EP". New recordings of the 4 songs on that EP appear on the new album.

Terra Filia - "Space". Terra Filia is father/daughter duo Stephen Bard and Emily Claire. Together they have crafted some folk-pop-rock, with percussion instruments adding some wonderful flourishes to the songs. The harmonies are lovely, and this album is an absolute joy to listen to.

To paraphrase their song "Beautiful Way"... Terra Filia has a beautiful way about them.

That's all for this week.

Makin

Makin Waves with The Nelsons: 'A Jersey Family'

From the moment they burst onto the scene with their self-penned 1990 debut album, "After the Rain," Matthew and Gunnar Nelson -- twin sons of Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Ricky Nelson -- captivated audiences with their striking good looks and trademark long blonde hair. However, it was their exceptional songwriting and commercially savvy rock sound that catapulted them to stardom, solidifying their status as third-generation torchbearers of the Nelson family legacy that also produced "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" television and radio shows.
