Lazlo, founder of BlowUpRadio.com (an online radio station based around New Jersey artists), shines a light on some of the many new releases from NJ based musicians each week with this column. This week Lazlo takes a look at releases by Carlton Wilkinson, Sean Faust, Screaming Females, Operants, and Deviant Youth.
Carlton Wilkinson (Produced by Dane Scalise) - "Inside Voices". Calton Wilkinson's new album, "Inside Voices", his first collaboration with Dane Scalise since they were in a band together in high school, is a fascinating collection of tunes. It is 20 songs in just shy of 60 minutes, and the songs musically encompass many styles of indie rock and pop. Lyrically, Carlton describes the songs as seeming to follow a theme of, "coming to terms with loss, maturity and mortality, found experiences that we work into constructive stories for ourselves and as a gift for listeners."
Sean Faust - "Live Volume Four - 50/ Fifty 9.18.22". If you're a Sean Faust fan like myself you've probably heard versions of these songs before, but this semi-live recording (full disclosure this originally aired on BlowUpRadio.com as part of our Banding Together benefit for the Spondylitis Association of America), captures lively, inspired recreations of Sean's alterna-prog sound.
Why did I refer to it as semi-live? I'll let Sean Faust explain, "I recorded the live tracks on 9/18/2022. A week later I decided it would be fun to add some guitar solos, hence the name 50 Fifty."
Screaming Females - "Desire Pathway". Screaming Females have long been a beloved rock band from New Brunswick, who built up a following by crafting strong albums and their electrifying live performances. It seems not that long ago that their debut, "Baby Teeth", came out, but that was way back in 2006. The band has come a long way from that release, evolving which each new album. Their latest album, "Desire Pathway", continues to showcase a band that has not plateaued, nay, this may be their best album yet! The songs are all rock, have hooks and really any one of the ten songs that make up the album could be a single.
Operants - "Chevy Malibu / The Shift". Two new peppy, punk rock ditties from the Operants come out of the garage and into your ears. Enjoy!
Deviant Youth - "Never Gonna Happen Land". Deviant Youth's latest single, "Never Gonna Happen Land" is a catchy pop-punk song, that kind of makes me miss that late 90's early 00's sound that became a big part of the Warped Tour. Deviant Youth would have thrived on that tour.
That's all for this week.
