Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...4/10/25

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 04/10/2025

"I'm well Danny and I hope you are as well," began pianist/keyboardist Russell Ferrante, an original founding member of Yellowjackets, who will be at the Bell Theater in Holmdel, NJ on Thursday April 24; their last U.s. show before heading to Europe. "So, the band started in the late '70s; we began as musicians playing with the guitarist Robin Ford and essentially, we formed a band within a band and that became Yellowjackets. Our first recording came out in 1981 and we've been at it since then; touring around the world. Our latest recording, which is called, "Fasten Up" is our twenty-seventh recording and I just took a look at "Jazz Week Magazine" and this is the third week where our recording has been in the number one spot. So, that's very exciting for the band and kind of amazing that after 45 plus years, we are still able to do this. We're really grateful to make music, tour and record and make music; we feel very fortunate."

A recent press release stated that, "Yellowjackets have evolved to become a genre unto themselves;" a pretty heady claim; or is it? Yellowjackets diverse backgrounds of traditional Jazz, Blues, Classical and yes, even Rock has allowed the band to not only survive for more than four decades but thrive on their version of "Fusion."

"My entry into being a professional musician started when I met Robin in the San Francisco Bay area, this was the early '70s and at that point, his group was playing the Blues scene with Jimmy Witherspoon and I joined Robin's band in 1973," Ferrante continued, "It was kind of a whirlwind, I had never even been on an airplane at that point. Our first gig was on the East Coast and our second gig was at Shea Stadium at the Kool Jazz Festival and then we went to Europe for five weeks. So, my mind was pretty blown at that moment and I thought, maybe this is something I want to do and here we are from that, 52 years later. The Kool Jazz Festival was there and Roberta Flack was on the bill; I forget the other groups but it was very exciting for a 21 year old and I'm a big sports fan as well, so that was an extra fun thing."

Ferrante says that the band's strength is its diversity; diversity with a commonality for their youthful roots.

"We love all kinds of music and all styles. Traditional Jazz is one of the kinds of bedrock elements in the band. Coltrane and Myles and all of that incredible genre and era of music is something we love and we kind of started playing during the '70s when groups like Weather Report and the early fusion groups were coming out and that was really exciting. Also, the technology that was coming out at the time, synthesizers and sequencers; the tools were expanding for musicians so we were curious about that and explored all of it. Some in the electronic world but also loving acoustic music and also, I and some of the other guys from the original band grew up in the Bay Area and there was a really strong R&B and Funk groups like Sly & the Family Stone and Tower of Power; those groups were playing at that point and that was really exciting music. So, I think all of the guys in the band have pretty broad musical tastes and bring that into the music we create."

"Fasten Up," as stated earlier, is the band's twenty-seventh record and over the span of all of those recordings, the band has had very few changes in the way of personnel.

"Bob Mintzer has been in the band since 1990 and he's really important and a prime composer, great player and improvisor. The one thing about the Yellowjackets is that there is no leader, it's four equal members contributing their ideas musically and in every aspect. So, there is Bob Mintzer playing saxophone and electronic wind instrument. The drummer is William Kennedy, he first began playing with us in 1986 and then took a 10 year hiatus in the early 2000s and then returned around 2010 and our bassist is Dane Alderson. He is originally from Perth, Australia and he has played with the band now for 10 years and so, that's the current line-up. Over the 40 plus years, the original band was Robin Ford on guitar, Jimmy Haslip who is from Long Island, New York and was the original bassist who played with us for over 30 years and the original drummer was Ricky Lawson. Ricky was an incredible musician who went on to play with Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder; he had a wonderful career. So, we've had a couple of different drummers, Will was actually the second drummer and he replaced Ricky Lawson and then when Will left, we had Peter Erskine play with us for one year and then it was Marcus Baylor; he and his wife Jean Baylor have a band called, The Baylor Project and then Will rejoined. I think that's the most notable thing about the group, it is really a band, it is really a cooperative enterprise, there is a lot of trust that you build from playing that many years together and we're still going, it's still challenging, it's still fun; this year is probably the busiest year we've had in quite a while. We've been playing almost every week these last couple of months and we have three tours of Europe; we'll be going over in May for about three weeks. Then, during the Summer and the Fall, we'll be touring with the vocalist Kurt Elling and he has a new project playing the music of Weather Report. So, we'll be his band and playing our music as well on those two European tours; we did play one concert in the U.S. with Kurt recently and that was in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and that was really fun with more to come. So, it's a really active year and a lot of exciting things to look forward to for us."

"We've actually won two Grammy Awards and have had close to 20 Grammy nominations through the years," he said, sounding both grateful and humble. "The most recent was a couple of years ago for our last recording which was called, "Parallel Motion" and the recording before that was also nominated for a Grammy; that was a recording that we did with the WDR Big Band in Cologne, Germany, we did a collaboration with them. We try to keep moving forward, that's one of the things we value most in the band, not to just keep doing the same things we've been doing, which would be easy to do after a long time but we really want to keep moving forward and growing as people and musicians and that's the motivation to keep making music and to grow."

"Fasten Up"  was released on February 21 via Mack Avenue Records with the unit hitting the road just prior to its official debut and recently, they've released a single; a rare cover version and one that has been done by the likes of Herbie Mann, Mel Torme, Quincy Jones and more.

"Comin' Home Baby," this was Bob Mintzer's brainchild and as he tells it, he went to a jazz performance or workshop during his early high school years and he heard the musicians playing the tune and the thought just occurred to him to rearrange the song and he had a section and it's a tune that he's always enjoyed and so he worked out this version for our new recording and yeah, it was really fun. Usually, we play mostly music that we've written ourselves but occasionally we'll do a cover of another tune and this was Bob's brainchild."

Never a group looking for conformity, Yellowjackets are constantly pushing the envelope, constantly looking to expand their musical and personal horizons and according to Ferrante, their concerts are a reflection of such.

"We've been having a ball playing and the concerts have been really well attended. When we come for the New Jersey concert, we'll be playing selected tunes from our 40 plus year career, including music from our most recent recording "Fasten Up." An interesting thing about the band, every concert, we play different songs. We don't have a setlist that we stick to and play every concert. So, depending on the venue and just how we're feeling, we'll pick various songs from the entire catalog. So, we'll play songs from the very first record through the twenty-seventh and we don't really know what that will be until we arrive that day. Another thing that occurred to me; our band kind of functions like you and I who are having a conversation right now and musically, that's what we're doing when we perform. We want it to be in the moment, something that is not premeditated. We have our songs and melodies are formed but when it comes to improvising and soloing, the music can go in a lot of different directions and we want it to be like a conversation; something that is just happening at that moment and not worked out beforehand. So, that makes it exciting and sort of leaves it open for unexpected things to happen. I think the human element and imperfection is beautiful. Now, the technology can kind of suck all of the imperfection out. The vocals can be tuned, the drummer can be put on a grid and have perfect time and all of that and for some situations maybe that's what's called for but for what we do; that's not what we're after. We're after a kind of authentic moment and whatever comes with that, the good and the bad and we're fine with that; humans are flawed (Laughs)."

After Holmdel, the band's heavy tour schedule has them heading to Europe and not returning Stateside until near the end of June. However, they don't seem to mind at all.

"In May when we head to Europe, I think the first gig is in Bonn and then we end up near Amsterdam in the Hague and then shortly thereafter we'll be heading back to Europe again for the Summer festivals over there. So, yeah, it's a very busy year but we're really looking forward to and excited to be playing this music all around the world; it has been an incredible ride."
