"Ummm, I don't know. I've done a few of these and I think I did one with Jason (Bonham). I don't know who else is going to be at this one coming up but they always have really interesting people involved so it will be great. My involvement is; over the years, I've been a counselor. So, I'll come in and spend a week with the campers and we'll build a band and write songs and pull off an acoustic performance and meet with the celebrities who come in at the end of the week. They'll spend time with us and listen to our compositions, jam with us and then we'll all go out to dinner, take pictures and this and that. This time, I'm gonna be the special guest who comes in at the end, I'm not doing the counseling. So, I'm the guy who comes in at the end and critiques their playing, songwriting and their performance and jams along with them, takes pictures and so forth; it's a little different role for me than I'm used to doing but I've been involved with the camps for many years so..."

So says George Lynch of Dokken and Lynch Mob as he prepares to once again attend Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy Camp, "Whole Lotta Rock Camp Volume ll" beginning today through March 23 in South Florida along with Jason Bonham, Pat Travers, Vinny Appice, Derek St. Holmes. Peter Klett, Stet Howland, Bumblefoot, Jean Beauvoir, Britt Lightning and more. 

Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy Camp was initiated nearly three decades ago and Lynch has been part of the event on numerous occasions but this time, his role is a bit different as he goes from "Counselor" to "Celebrity." So, given the increased popularity of these camps and things like "The School of Rock," which sprung from the infamous Jack Black film; waht came first? the chicken or the egg?

"At first, I was slightly intimidated because you're really under a microscope," he began. "I'm not a learned theory musician, I don't have a lot of theoretic knowledge, I'm sort of just self-taught. So, being put in the position to teach somebody gives me some anxiety so I had to get over it but then again, I've been teaching guitar on and off for a large part of my life. I taught at Musonia, Randy Rhoads' mom's school, I had a thing called "The Dojo" (Dojo Guitar Academy) for a while which was an online thing and we'd meet once a year where we'd rent a building by the airport and everybody would fly in and we'd spend a week just doing guitar stuff. So, I've had a long history of teaching but I've had to modify; maybe not modify but find a way to connect with people through other than standard theory language. I sort of had my own language that I had to find a way to explain in colloquial terms that people understand and to be able to get across what I was trying to say in my music and try to share that with students. That's what I do and I've been doing that for years but before rock camp, I can't think of any other organization that was doing that. Obviously it has been made popular by the film but as you said, I believe the egg came first (Laughs). I'll be quite honest, I'm surprised at how ubiquitous it has become. We have a home in Southern California and there is a rock camp right by our house; they're everywhere. I just really wouldn't have thought there'd be that big a demand for that but there is a consistent demand, it's just part of life in America now and it's wonderful. Having a musical education can not be a bad thing for anybody; in fact, quite the opposite, I think it just edifies a lot of different aspects of our thinking. My oldest son is a good example. My oldest son went to GIT (Guitar Institute of Technology), maybe GIT pre-dated fantasy camp but my son went to GIT in Hollywood for a couple of years and took it very seriously, learning guitar and guitar theory. After he graduated, he went on to college and he became a chemical engineer and mathematician and I really think that the musical education rewired his brain and helped him make the synaptic connections that allowed him to think along those lines where he became a very successful engineer and understood math on a level he could appreciate. Music is math, it's the same thing, it's just intervals and a language that we impose on the universe. So, I think, in some sense, to see music education throughout the country and the world benefits humanity as a whole; it just elevates all of us."

"I guess the question," he went on, "Is having all of these rock fantasy camps and GITs and other music schools like Berklee is; what's the end game? I guess that can be said for any educational discipline; do they give you a job when you're done learning? Are there enough jobs out there? I mean, how many people are gonna be rock stars? How many people are gonna get record deals? There are lots of other places you can be and still be in the music world or the music business; I think that's the other side of the coin you need to think about that maybe hasn't been stressed or addressed as thoroughly because a music school is a business. You don't want it to end up being like a Trump University where it's just there to take advantage of people. You want it to benefit people, the most people as possible, most of the time. Channel people somewhere where they can use their new found knowledge to support themselves and pursue their dreams; that's the tricky thing, it's hard to quantify that."

Now charged with a different role from camps past; what is a typical camp like? According to Lynch, it's not all just fun and games.

"It's pretty intense and you're very busy from a counselor and a student standpoint. They have very full days, it starts with pre-breakfast meetings for the staff; all through the day, every half-hour is accounted for and even after dinner, which is usually a late dinner, we all get together, both counselors and students/campers and after dinner there is other stuff. There are workshops, performances, these guys just go and go; it is really exhausting after a week, you are ready to drop but in a good way. It beats sitting around doing nothing, they keep a very tight schedule, some things are optional for people who don't really want to kill themselves running from one thing to another or if it becomes too much or overwhelming but if you want it, it's there for you, there is a lot to do. A lot of it is fun, they do a good mix in the laboratory of really learning the nuts and bolts which can be a little bit tedious but maybe not and then there is the fun stuff. You get to go into the recording studio and record a song, learn how that process works, you play a couple of live shows and then of course; there is lots of jamming. There's improv and people breaking off and forming little groups and jamming together and then you get to sit down with your guitar hero if he or she is teaching and get one on one in a room and ask them questions one on one, watch how their hands work and try and emulate what they do and channel that, it's pretty cool."

Earlier, he stated that he was pretty much "Self-taught" but like the mentors at the camp, George had a real difference maker in his music development.

"I probably get the most out of it," he said with careful thought when asked what was in it for him. "I have to kind of prepare myself because I'm gonna be under the microscope teaching people and I have to be at my best playing level. I can't go in there unrehearsed and cold. I want to be warmed up, I have to have ideas and think about what I want to show people and talk to people about and have different exercises prepared, so it makes me a better player. It makes me think about my own playing a lot too but the other thing too is that it keeps me focused on someone else and not myself, which I think is very healthy (Laughs). I put myself in their shoes and it makes me remember what it was like when I was starting out how it was and how hard it was and it's nice giving people a hand up. I had a teacher named Jim Taylor who I loved and I cherished those 30 minute lessons once a week like my life depended on it. He was my mentor and I absorbed every single ounce and note that he exposed to me. Man, I couldn't get enough of it and I channeled him and he became my biggest influence. I was very lucky to have a teacher like that, that I loved so much because I had other teachers; you know, you'd just go to a mom and pop music store in the '60s when I was a kid and you get what you get but this was different. When I had Jim Taylor, he was like a role model, he was like Clapton. He was at that level of Clapton in Cream, that's the kind of style he had. So, to watch those hands and those kinds of chops, I was like, whoa, crap; in real life right there. He never taught me any theory, I didn't want to know theory. I just wanted to watch him play and learn how to have vibrato and phrasing like that; he was on a whole other level."
