While the state has been in lockdown, New Jersey Stage has been working behind the scenes to add new features to the website. One of the most prominent areas of focus has been with our radio station, The Penguin Rocks. The station offers ten DJ run programs that are available throughout the day from the station’s now playing area and are also are available on demand. The shows generally play music in the genres of rock, indie rock, and Americana.
The station is anchored by Radio Jersey, a show run by Lee Mrowicki every day Monday through Friday that takes over the station from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Mrowicki was nicknamed “The Voice of The Stone Pony” by Rolling Stone magazine and has been associated with the legendary Asbury Park club for decades. This is the only daily radio program that plays just music by artists from New Jersey. It covers everything from Frank Sinatra to Bruce Springsteen and everything in between, showcasing the Garden State like never before. Mrowicki is also the host of Beyond the Palace, a weekly show that plays music by all of your favorite Jersey Shore artists.
For even more Jersey sounds check out Classic Jersey, one of three weekly shows hosted by New Jersey Stage publisher Gary Wien. This show includes tracks by the biggest names from Jersey rock (Springsteen, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, Glen Burtnik, John Eddie, Bon Jovi, etc.) as well as hundreds of bands and singer-songwriters from the station’s 15 year history. Over a thousand artists have tracks in the show’s mix.
Mike Marrone, the veteran disc jockey known locally from the old FM106.3 (Eatontown) and nationally as the host of “The Loft” on Sirius/XM presents From The Basement - an eclectic 3-hour show that features brand new tracks amidst favorites of Mike’s from over the years along with plenty of music news.
Sean Carolan, a fellow DJ at the old 106.3, presents Altrok’s Radio Showcase. The weekly show brings you the best selection of new and classic modern rock seen on the Jersey Shore since the demise of the legendary FM106.3.
And if you were a fan of the alternative / college rock of the 1980s you’ll enjoy Gary Wien’s weekly show Bring Me The Head of Max Headroom. This show is his tribute to 80s rock. He believes the decade always gets a bad rap. “I figure somebody’s got to defend it… it might as well be me.”
Danny Coleman who writes the weekly “Rock On!” column every Thursday at New Jersey Stage hosts Rock On Radio - a weekly show that features Danny interviewing unsigned bands, solo artists, and national entertainers in a laid back atmosphere. Guest callers keep each show lively as well.
For more music from unsigned or up-and-coming acts, check out The Deuce Radio Show - a one hour broadcast presented by Matt Barker that features bands and artists promoted by Deuce out of their office in London, England.
Fans of Americana and roots music will love John Godfrey’s Troubadour Show. Each show includes a mix of new releases and old favorites, covering the best in alt-country, Americana, country & western, folk, rock, roots, and singer-songwriters. John records the show from his studio in Scotland.
The final show is Lighty’s Corner, a one-hour show hosted by Gary Wien that plays a little bit of everything. You’ll get 5-6 brand new tracks submitted to the station from all around the world; obscure favorites and deep cuts; along with some well known hits.
