originally published: 05/06/2019

Roman Zavada To Perform Live Piano Concert At Novins Planetarium(TOMS RIVER, NJ) -- Experience a dialogue between a man, his piano and the northern lights as self-taught Ukrainian and Québécois-born pianist Roman Zavada performs “Résonances Boréales” under a full dome original movie of the aurora borealis at the Robert J. Novins Planetarium, on the Ocean County College campus. Show are scheduled for 7:00pm on Friday, May 17, and at 5:00pm on Saturday, May 18.

“Acclaimed by critics and the public for its beauty and originality, this outstanding 360 degree piano performance immerses the audience above the 60th parallel deep into the heart of the northern spirit,” Planetarium staff note.

As Zavada’s website, explains, the performance idea was conceived on tour in 2013, when “the pianist traveled to the shores of Prelude Lake, in the Northwest Territories, to witness the northern lights, which he had never seen before.

“With an upright piano anchored to the rock of the Canadian Shield, at the edge of the taiga, Zavada started improvising, inspired by one of the most spectacular and majestic phenomenas on Earth. In the company of photographer Sylvain Humbert, he spent two weeks composing new pieces that were then recorded in studio. The album Résonances boréales was released in February 2016. … The piano compositions reflect with sensibility the feeling we have under the northern lights in a very poetic way.”

Tickets to these performances are a general admission price of $20 for all patrons. Advanced ticket purchase is recommended, as space is limited. Purchase tickets at ocean.edu/planetarium
