"Ya' know," says legendary member of the OutLaws Henry Paul, "It's still fun for me and for us, it's just different fun. The first fun was during our age of discovery. These days we know how to dance and what it's all about. So I challenge myself and the band challenges itself to put on a good show every time we take the stage. The band, the fans and the music are older but the rewards are priceless. The band doing well every time we take the stage is our main concern and it usually always works out."
The Outlaws have been at the forefront of the "Southern Rock" genre for more than 40 years and have built, not just a fan base but legions of followers all along the way. Paul was there at the start and realizes the importance of the band's place in rock history along with the importance of capturing its essence. Reflecting on the past by performing in the present, he realized the need to record and preserve the group's music in its purest form and their latest effort, "Legacy Live," does just that.
A 21 track two disc album which features most of the band's earlier material with a couple of classics thrown in for good measure awaits those who make the wise decision to purchase it. Paul claims that the band has taken great pains to present this material in a way that will satisfy their entire fan base. "I was there when we made the first three records," he started; "Those three are looked upon as the defining records. So on these recordings, we really sorted through our material and night after night of live performances and with the exception of "Ghost Riders," there's nothing from the later catalog. The Billy Jones contributions were considered left of center and were not appreciated then but they are more so now. So us putting them out there and putting this band's interpretations to them now; I've got to tell you, it can be quite emotional at times."
Paul also knows that their supporters crave the hits as well and that the more seasoned OutLaws fan desires the older, less traveled roads the band will sometimes go down too. "Ya' know, the band, I'd say from 2008 going forward, just after Hughie's (guitarist Hughie Thomasson) passing and I assuming more of the leadership role in the band, the band 's live performances have begun a return to prominence. We started playing more and more shows and we all seemed to have a renewed spirit. I don't know if Hughie passing away was a sign to us to enjoy it while we can or what (laughs) but we are really enjoying ourselves and the fans seem to love it too. People began asking for another live record, they wanted to be able to take home the musical legacy that they just witnessed. Songs like "South Carolina," "Girl From Ohio" and "Prisoner," mean a lot to our loyal fans and are hardly ever heard live. We wanted to get those out there but yet do right by our original members like Billy Jones, etc. while still getting the fans affection. This is what I was going for when I sat down and started sorting things out and of course technology allows for some liberties but it's definitely an honest impression of our work."
When asked about a possible tour and the future of the band, Paul was sure and steady; once again making it about the group's followers. "Tour? We've been on tour forever, we sing for our supper," he explained with a laugh. "Honestly? We'll start touring in January and won't end up until December, it's how we make our living. For now though, I'm writing new material and we'll be going in the studio in the spring with 10 to 12 new songs. Our last record never got the attention we had hoped for but our fan base really appreciated it. I'd love the opportunity to do a live DVD but that's far more complicated and expensive but I'll never rule anything out."
That's it for this week! Please continue to support live and original music and until next week....ROCK ON!
