(NEPTUNE, NJ) -- The Township of Neptune, Neptune Board of Education, and the Volunteer Planning Committee invite the public to celebrate a Black History Month program on Saturday, February 27th, 12:00pm to 3:00pm, at the Michael T. Lake Performing Arts Center of Neptune High School, 55 Neptune Boulevard. The admission is free and all are invited to attend. The theme is "Rise of the Queen" featuring Vanguard Awards presented to Mrs. Gwendolyn Love, Executive Director of Lunch Break, Mrs. Titana Hawkins, Vice Principal of Neptune High School, and Ms. Hedy Bright, first Black Woman Special Police Officer in Neptune.
The Corporate Partner Award will be presented to Meridian Health with Mr. Wayne Boatwright, Vice President of Diversity, accepting on its behalf. Four scholarship awards will be presented to Neptune High School seniors Monica Seidle, Cresaya Hester, Chanel Aliyah Ellison, and Sasha Alexanderia Murphy. Art Exhibits, Vendor Exhibits, Refreshments, Music, and more are all on the agenda. A special recognition will be presented to Mrs. Dorothy Robinson - a long time resident turning 100 years young. And last, an award winning and returning play will take place entitled "Sistah, Sistah, Oh My Sistah", written, choreographed, and produced by Neptune's own Ms. Carmen Davis.
Ms. Carmen Davis was born in Neptune, educated in Camden, graduated in 1981 from Asbury Park High School, studied and majored in theater with emphasis on performing arts and communications at West Virginia University. Carmen began her journey and is pursuing her passion through her talents and gifts. Her passion is revealed in her award winning and inspiring productions of: "Vivids", "Why Do Fools Fall in Love?", "Images", "Images II", "The Truth Shall Make You Free", "First Ladies", "Beauty Parlor Holla", and the production at Neptune High School is "Sistah, Sistah, Oh My Sistah"
This one hour play consists of 12 monologues of testimonies, short stories, poetry, and situations conceived by Ms. Carmen Davis. Images of being Black and a woman, exposing some of which she endured as an innocent child, some experiences of other women, true depictions of growing pains, conflicts, secrets, influences imposed, joys, and struggles. Listen carefully and feel the feeling, overcome, and most of all... heal !
