In issue 50, New Jersey Stage gave readers the opportunity to learn more about the writers who contribute to the magazine and the daily site. We’d like to give you the opportunity to learn more about the two shows that are featured in our magazine each month. One is a podcast called 2 Guys From Jersey that runs a new episode every Wednesday. It involves Dr. D, Rocky, and Erin (a recent addition to the team) trying to settle trivial bar arguments that have plagued mankind for centuries.
In October, the team celebrated its first anniversary with Episode 52. Recent shows have involved debates about the best opening lyrics to songs, things they want to do before they die, top 5 cartoon characters, and top 5 coolest movie characters. Shows tend to cover movies, music, sports, television, and food on a regular basis. In other words, it’s exactly what you’d expect to hear at your favorite bar.
New Jersey Stage spoke with Rocky to learn more about the show.
What inspired the podcast?
Last summer I (Dr. D) had been doing stand-up comedy for a little over a year and I was looking for some other creative outlets to explore. Years ago a friend encouraged me to start a blog to spew my anger about sports and other things. I decided to do the same with a podcast, spewing nonsense and being funny. After recording a few demo episodes and sharing with friends, Rocky said to me, “podcasting is like sex, terrific fun alone, but even better with a partner.”
What have been some of your favorite episodes?
We had a great show with a friend and comedian Mike Morse about our worst first dates which was outrageously funny. The last few episodes have been my favorite - mostly because we have added a third host to the show, the beautiful and talented Erin Wohlberg.
Where in New Jersey are you all from?
We were both born and raised in Bergen County and still live up here. Erin is a native of Morris County and lives in Passaic County, so we are all North Jersey people. The shore people hate us.
Have you seen that there is another “2 Guys from Jersey” on YouTube? Think you guys could take them?
I doubt we can take anyone. Possibly in a Dorito eating contest, but that is about it.
What is the best and worst thing about doing the podcast?
The best thing is spending time with friends and being able to sit back, relax, laugh and enjoy life. The worst thing is coming up with categories and finding time to get together and record. We are all busy people.
Finally, where would you like the podcast to be in another year?
I have no idea. We enjoy doing it. We are not looking to have the biggest podcast in the world. We would like to increase our number of listeners, but just having people tell us they enjoy listening and it’s a good break from the everyday for them is enough for me.
