Music At Bunker Hill Announces Three Afternoon Concerts

originally published: 03/30/2021

(MULLICA HILL, NJ) -- Music at Bunker Hill, in partnership with The Music Barn, presents three afternoon concerts this spring, offered live and online at 2:30pm. The concerts include performances by Catalyst Quartet, Sybarite5, and A Festival of Strings. All take place at The Music Barn, Gloucester County 4-H Fairgrounds, 275 NJ-77, Mullica Hill, NJ. COVID-19 guidelines specify face coverings for all audience, artists, and staff. State regulations limit attendance numbers at live events.

Catalyst Quartet (4/24 Live, 4/25 Online) presents a program of rarely heard music by Florence Price and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, bringing to light the music of these wonderful composers. Hailed by The New York Times at its Carnegie Hall debut as “invariably energetic and finely burnished… playing with earthy vigor,” the Grammy Award-winning Catalyst Quartet was founded by the internationally acclaimed Sphinx Organization in 2010. The ensemble (Karla Donehew Perez, violin; Abi Fayette, violin; Paul Laraia, viola; and Karlos Rodriguez, cello) believes in the unity that can be achieved through music and imagine their programs and projects with this in mind, redefining and reimagining the classical music experience.

Sybarite5 (5/8 Live, 5/9 Online) presents a program that is uniquely their own, drawing on music including Radiohead, John Coltrane, and Armenian Folk Songs. Equal parts passion, grit, and musical ecstasy, Sybarite5 is an intoxicating cocktail of post-genre musical goodness expressed through the virtuosity of Sami Merdinian and Sarah Whitney, violins; Angela Pickett, viola; Laura Metcalf, cello; and Louis Levitt, bass. This exciting quintet is constantly evolving, defying categorization, and has been keeping audiences on their toes for 10 years.

A Festival of Strings (5/22 Live, 5/23 Online) brings together alumnae from Itzhak Perlman’s Perlman Music Program, pairing Brahms’ String Quintet in F Major, a pillar of the repertoire, with Max Bruch’s gorgeous but nearly forgotten String Quintet in E flat major.

Seating is provided in a covered pavilion or bring-your-own-chair for lawn seating. Refreshments include on-site food trucks and Beer Garden by Center Square Tavern. Driving directions, concert information and ticket links can be found at www.musicatbunkerhill.org
