The Art School at Old Church Announces Exciting New Offerings for Winter 2021

originally published: 12/21/2020

(DEMAREST, NJ) -- The Art School at Old Church has announced its Winter session of classes and workshops, which begins January 4, 2021, and runs through mid-March. You may now register online over the phone (201-767-7160), or by mail (561 Piermont Road, Demarest, NJ 07627).

A full suite of offerings is available through The Art School’s Virtual Classroom, where students can receive quality art instruction from the comfort of home. In-studio classes follow state and CDC guidelines, including limited capacity to facilitate social distancing. For a full list of the precautions being taken for in-studio classes, click here.

Courses include basketry, collage, drawing, jewelry making, painting, photography, pottery, printmaking, sculpture, and more for adults, teens, families, and children – including those with special needs. The semester also includes one-day workshops, where participants can hone a skill and create something new to take home in a short amount of time. Custom-made classes are available for those who would like to create privately with a group of friends or loved ones. With this “Create a Class” option, The Art School can arrange for an experienced instructor to conduct safe and socially distanced art classes at your home or online.

The Art School has also added new, distinguished faculty members to its roster for 2021. Potters George Taylor and Janis Cutler Gear join the ceramics department, with Taylor teaching Building with Slab and Coil, and Cutler Gear teaching Painting, Carving, and Surface Decoration in Porcelain and Stoneware, in addition to Wheel-Throwing Form and Design Intensive. In the jewelry/metalsmithing studio, Nancy Green-Grady will teach Metals 101, where beginners can learn the fundamental techniques required to make rings, pendants, and more! Visit www.tasoc.org/course-catalog to read a detailed description of each course. Not sure which medium, teacher, or class is right? Call 201-767-7160 to speak with The Art School at Old Church staff.

Founded in 1974, The Art School at Old Church is a non-profit cultural center providing community access to enriching experiences in the arts. The school offers art classes and workshops as well as free gallery exhibitions, cultural events, and outreach programs for special populations. It houses two art galleries: the Mikhail Zakin Gallery and the Café Gallery. The Annual Pottery Show & Sale is an opportunity to view and purchase one-of-a-kind works of art from nationally recognized potters. Proceeds from The Annual Pottery Show & Sale and from Our Thrift Shop, located in Westwood, NJ, benefit The Art School at Old Church. The Art School’s programs are made possible in part by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as contributions from foundations, corporations, businesses, and individuals.
