(BELMAR, NJ) -- New Jersey Stage Issue 71 is our third since the world essentially closed down. Despite no shows to promote, we've got a lot for the music, film, and art fan to enjoy. The issue is available for free at www.NJArtsMag.com and readable on any PC, tablet, or smartphone. It's designed like a regular print publication, but has pages come alive with audio, video, and interactive elements.
Our cover story is on The Incoherents, an indie film that will resonate with anyone who has ever tried being a rock and roller in the NJ / NY music scene. Bruce Flansburgh (Jeff Auer) is a bored, 40-something New York paralegal who hasn’t let go of his dream of rock stardom. While slogging through an increasingly unbearable day to day existence, it dawns on him that the reunions of The Pixies, Soundgarden and other alternative/indie rock bands from the 90’s could inspire his former group, The Incoherents, to reform. The group, each mired in some sort of midlife malaise, reunite their 90's indie rock band for one last shot at stardom. The film is available on Video On Demand (VOD) - perfect for watching while movie theaters are not available for us.
Another VOD film we spotlight is ReRUN - a film written by Gary O. Bennett and directed by his wife Alyssa Rallo Bennett, a pair of New Jersey residents who use the Garden State as the backdrop for much of the film. Christopher Lloyd plays George Benson, a man in his 80s whose grandson lets him in on a very special secret: his closet acts as a portal to whatever place and time you wish to revisit. George doesn’t believe it’s true, but when his curiosity finally gets the best of him he decides to revisit the day the love of his life gets killed when she’s hit by a vehicle. It's Christopher Lloyd in another time travel film!
We also talk with Irish musician Ben Reel who recently released The Nashville Calling, an album that many are calling his best yet. In addition to recording it in Nashville, the artist had Garry W. Tallent of the E Street Band play bass on the record. Bob Makin talks with Tight Lipped and reviews the latest releases by Brian Fallon, Debra Devi, Dinosaur Eyelids, and Gooch & the Motion. Brian Kelley takes us inside the making of a music video created during quarantine. And our Featured Music Video of the Month is from The Princeton Footnotes - a cover of Phish's "Julius" that was recorded/filmed remotely.
Eric Hillis reviews a pair of films that are also available on VOD: A Good Woman Is Hard to Find and Dreamland. And we've got pieces on Dissonance, an art exhibit at The Morris Museum you can see online, The Penguin Rocks (our own radio station comprised of DJ run programs), and the NJ Stage Virtual Event Calendar which has provided listings of over 1,000 shows since quarantine began.
Each issue of New Jersey Stage magazine tries to show the arts in a way that print publications cannot do. We believe coverage of the arts should be as creative as the arts itself. Instead of just writing about a musician, we want you to be able to hear the music; film reviews include movie trailers, and we include videos that help provide "the story behind the story" -- providing you with additional context - whenever we can.
The magazine offers free subscriptions that send you an email when new issues are available. Old issues are also available from the magazine.
New Jersey Stage magazine is also unique in that every advertisement is interactive as well. Instead of simply running a print ad, we let users easily click on ads or links within the ad to get more information. The magazine takes full advantage of the digital format, offering full-color ads with multiple links that can even be changed several times within the month - all for a price far less than a banner ad elsewhere. In fact, our full page ad package includes 5 different ads for just $100. The package includes at full page, full-color ad (8.5" x 11") in the magazine; that same ad as a 600x776 banner ad on our website, plus three of the most popular banner ad sizes (300x250, 300x600, and 970x120). Ads can all promote the same message or serve as completely different ads. Complimentary ad design is available if needed. For more information on advertising, click here.
