Gas Lamp Teen Players Present "Newsies"

originally published: 11/29/2019

(GLEN RIDGE, NJ) -- The Gas Lamp Teen Players will perform their Fall Mainstage show, Disney’s Newsies - The Broadway Musical, during four shows from December 6-8  at the Ridgewood Avenue School Theater in Glen Ridge. Based on the 1992 motion picture and inspired by a true story, Newsies features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman, and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein. Featuring the now classic songs “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” and “Santa Fe,” Newsies is packed with non-stop thrills and a timeless message, perfect for the whole family and every audience.

Performances are Friday, December 6th at 7:00pm; Saturday, December 7th at 1:00pm and 7:00pm; and Sunday, December 8th at 1:00pm. Tickets are $15.00 for adult and $10.00 for student/senior and are available online.

Forty-six teens from several North Jersey counties take the stage to narrate the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged "newsies." When titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what's right!

“The trove of talents in this cast is simply unbelievable”, says Kristy Graves - Gas Lamp artistic director and co-director of the musical - “Two of our teen actors were nominated for Perry Awards as Outstanding Youth Actors for our 2019 production of Les Misèrables, and as many as twenty performers constitute the incredible dance core who will dance, tap, do acrobatics. We are also very excited to welcome choreographer Michael Scannelli to our show; he was nominated for a 2019 Perry Award and is currently up for two awards for his choreography. You’ve never seen dance like this on the Gas Lamp stage!”

“I cannot imagine a better musical to follow our successful run of Les Miz”, continues co-director Stephen Buntrock, “The energy, the fun that these young artists bring to the material is truly infectious. Our actors are playing characters from 120 years ago, but along the way they realize how much they still have in common with those youth. Having played Pulitzer this past summer in a Lexington, KY production, I felt an even deeper connection to this exciting material, with a truly rich music, possibly my favorite aspect of Newsies”.
