Ricardo Lorenzo, Jersey Filmmaker, Running Crowdfunding Campaign for "An Unlikely Story"

originally published: 01/24/2019

Ricardo Lorenzo, a filmmaker based in Ewing, is currently running an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign to raise funds for a film called An Unlikely Story.  The film is about Syl who struggles to commit suicide until she meets Jeff, a lonely cannibal, desperate for friendship. The two make a pact in which Jeff will kill then consume Syl in order to obtain an eternal friendship. As their unlikely friendship blossoms, Jeff and Syl struggle to understand where their relationship truly lies. It's a dark comedy with the tagline "Think When Harry Met Sally... meets Todd Solondz: Sally wants to die and Harry is possibly a cannibal."

The crowdfunding campaign hopes to raise $7,000 for production costs.  The campaign will end in mid-March. The film is currently in development as they rehearse with actors, hire their crew and book locations. They are set to start shooting in July 2019.

An Unlikely Story will be Lorenzo's third short film. The filmmaker previously ran a successful crowdfunding campaign to fund his film Transparent in 2013.

From the campaign's page, Lorenzo states, "As an avid comic book reader, I try to write stories that I'd not only wanna see on screen, but I try to envision it in a world created by Daniel Clowes, Gabrelle Bell, Adrian Tomine, Charles Forsman, Ulli List, Jeff Lemire, or Dash Shaw. Sometimes, comics are more influential than movies. An Unlikely Story is a story about friendship and platonic companionship. Those relationships matter most than romantic relationships, at times."

"Originally, It started off as a story about two men in need of companionship outside of romantic conquests. After watching When Harry Met Sally, I realized I wanted to tell a story where a friendship between a man and woman isn't saturated by the idea of sex. When Harry Met Sally brings up a very tough question: Can a man and a woman be platonic without sex flooding their relationship or even their thoughts? Unfortunately, it ends by demonstrating; well it kind of can. Not a bad story at all. Probably the best romcom in existence, but it's a different era and I have to say there are certain circumstances that can bring a man and a woman together without sex being present."

"Anxiety, depression, along with suicide are another heavy themes in the story as well. I tend to notice this topic being romanticized by teenage dramas. The truth is it fucking sucks and as an adult, it gets worse; untreated. Peers tend to be less emapthetic, which places you in a much darker hole until you finally explode. This is why you see Syl in this lonely dark place, which pushes her to suicide but anxiety and guilt for her family is what pushes to be murdered. And the desperate and lonely, Jeff seems to be the best option."

Lorenzo says he knows people visiting the crowdfunding page will wonder why Syl is depressed, what drives her to want to end her life.

"In my experience with a relative and friends who have committed suicide, the truth is we don't really know what pushes to go this far. Everyone is different. They're triggered by various instances and sometimes it something you can easily face. The real question is how can we be more empathetic to issues that may not matter to us but can feel like the end of the world to others?"

The money from the campaign will go towards paying the cast and crew and providing food for them; location fees; transportation and gas costs; set/costume design; lighting and grip; camera costs; post production expenses; sound mix; color correction; original score; and film festival submission fees.

The campaign includes several perks based on contribution values.  For as little as $15 you can have your name appear in the credits. For those who want to make a signficant contribution, they can get an Associate Producer Credit for $200 or an Executive Producer Credit for $500.

To donate to the campaign, visit the Indiegogo page.

Touching

Touching animated short Crowboy screens at the 2025 New Jersey Film Festival on February 8th!

Recently, I read that teenagers resist reading young adult fiction but instead look for adult material, while younger children, hoping to get a peek of teenagerhood, would read about high schools and puberty. According to this cycle, it makes me wonder if adults miss the comfort of children’s fairy tales.  This may be true in a way. Occasionally, when the exhaustion from work and life pile up on a rainy day or a Friday night, it is too easy to simply want to crawl under the blanket with a mug of hot soup and watch a little something. If that’s the case for you, perhaps you’d like to watch the short, animated film Crowboy.

Exciting

Exciting short Embryo screens at the 2025 New Jersey Film Festival on February 8th!

Embryo, directed by J. Eliza Wall, follows the development of an embryo across the period of a surrogate pregnancy, showing the preparation of the mother and father as they prepare for the arrival of their daughter Fern. The film shines in its editing style, intercutting short videos from the two with images of fruits and vegetables equal to the size of the baby each week, as well as drawings and paintings of ferns and other plants. The interesting and unique style of editing brings a special charm to the situation, making the audience feel as though they are a part of the journey alongside the couple. As the weeks go on, anticipation builds as they celebrate the embryo’s health and growth over time.
