Beatbox champ Butterscotch To Perform At Rowan University

originally published: 10/30/2017

(GLASSBORO, NJ) -- Butterscotch, the retro-futuristic voice percussion virtuosa hailed as a one-woman vocal symphony, kicks off the 2017 Marie Rader Presenting Series offered by the College of Performing Arts at Rowan University with a concert on Friday, November 10 at 7:00pm in the university’s Pfleeger Concert Hall.

Beginning her career in hip hop's underground beatbox battle scene, Butterscotch ultimately entered the spotlight by winning the first World Hip Hop Beatbox Women's Championship in 2005 and then the West Coast Champion title in 2007 (beating 18 men). Another breakthrough came thanks to the television series America's Got Talent in 2007, introducing her to the broader world when she reached the final four of that season. The exposure gained her thousands of fans and kickstarted a career that continues to this day.

Since then she has rocked stages around the world with a blend of jazz, soul, hip hop, and R&B. Born of mixed heritage (African American/Native American/Asian/German) and a proud LGBTQ team player and activist, her music always contains a message to reach those who are in need of love and inspiration, and addresses mental health issues because of her own struggle with depression in her youth and knows that music harnesses the power to save lives.

In keeping with this interest in outreach, education and social issues, Butterscotch will participate in a series of conversations and workshops while at Rowan. She will engage with students from the Music Industry program, the Dance & Theatre Workshop, and through a session hosted by the university’s Office of Social Justice, Inclusion, and Conflict Resolution.

In addition to her own work, she has traveled the world performing alongside legends such as Erykah Badu, Thievery Corporation, Earth, Wind & Fire, Nile Rodgers, Sergio Mendes, Bobby McFerrin, Wyclef Jean, Talib Kweli, LA Philharmonic, and the WDR Big Band, to name a few.
