If you ever wondered what it looks like inside a top recording studio, Stormin' Norman Seldin's video for "The Making of Looking For An Angel" will give you the answer. The video takes you inside the control room at SONY Studios in Nashville where the S.O.A.P. (Sound of Asbury Park) legend's latest single is recorded by fellow Asbury sound creator Doc Holiday with help from his Nashville Studio "A" Team.
According to Seldin, the two have been close friends for well over fifty years, meeting in the Red Bank jewelry store owned by Norman's father when Doc was getting his wedding bands.
"He was shocked to find out I was already promoting, managing, recording, and performing with bands at my age," said Seldin. "We finally talked and Doc became one of my lead singers in The Soul Set along with his former drummer Donal Scascia and we became quite popular opening for The Rascals, Johnny Maestro & The Brooklyn Bridge, and dozens of others along the way. He decided to go into full time performing, producing and recording for the next thirty years and has never stopped."
"Looking For An Angel With A Broken Wing" will be released nationally to radio stations on October 1st and is available on iTunes and other online sites. The song features Norman's passionate, soulful vocals with lines like "I'm looking for an angel with a broken wing / someone who knows the pain, but is not not afraid to cry."
Outside of Jersey, Doc Holiday has added to his story as a solid producer in one of America's most famous music cities. He was named the Nashville Universe Award Winner "Producer Of The Year" 3 years in a row from 2014-2016. Having Doc Holiday record the track was a great move. Holiday was always impressed by Seldin's piano performance and his vocal range, as well as his ability for recognizing talent. Seldin knew he would bring the best out of him.
"Doc decided to put his money and experience up and brought me to SONY Studios in Nashville, TN and put 'Looking For An Angel With A Broken Wing' out nationally where he thinks it belongs," continued Seldin. "He is shipping it nationally to not only top country stations, but adult contemporary stations as well. They have already asked for it and it's not even out yet."
Nearly eleven years ago on December 9, 2006, Stormin' Norman and Doc Holiday were among the names immortalized on a plaque near Asbury Park's Paramount Theatre which celebrates the names of the musicians and people instrumental in the city's musical history. In addition to those two, the plaque includes Bruce Springsteen (and E Street Band members Garry Tallent, Steve Van Zandt, Vini "Maddog" Lopez, Clarence Clemons, David Sancious, Danny Federici), Southside Johnny, Bill Chinnock, Sonny Kenn, Margaret and Tom Potter of The Upstage Club, and others who helped make music an important part of Asbury Park.
It's great to see so many of the people on that list continuing to add to their own stories. You can purchase a copy of "Looking For An Angel With A Broken Wing" at iTunes.
Upcoming shows for Seldin include The Bay Point Inn (Highlands) on Saturday, October 21 and Overture in Wilmington, DE on Saturday, October 28. He will also be putting together his "Stormin' Norman Monster Band" for the 2018 Light of Day shows in Asbury Park.
